«The Damnation of Faust» (French: «La Damnation de Faust») is a large-scale musical work by the French composer Hector Berlioz, created in 1846 and based on Goethe’s tragedy.
Berlioz himself defined it as belonging to a rare genre—the «dramatic legend.» The work occupies a position midway between classical opera and a theatrical oratorio for soloists, chorus, and orchestra.
