Vienna State Opera 2026/27 Season Opening, December 17, 2026 – Premiere – Hector Berlioz “The Damnation of Faust”, Wiener Staatsoper,Vienna, Austria.

A major opera premiere—”The Damnation of Faust”—is set for the Vienna State Opera (Wiener Staatsoper). It will be one of the highlights of the 2026/2027 Austrian theater season.

The performances will take place in Vienna from December 17 to 29, 2026.
Director: the production is being created by the renowned American director Lydia Steier.
Musical Director: French conductor Bertrand de Billy.
Lead roles: John Osborn (Faust), Ève-Maud Hubeaux (Marguerite), and Christian Van Horn (Méphistophélès).

“The Damnation of Faust” (French: “La Damnation de Faust”) is a large-scale musical work by the French composer Hector Berlioz, created in 1846 and based on Goethe’s tragedy.

Berlioz himself defined it as belonging to a rare genre—the “dramatic legend.” The work occupies a position midway between classical opera and a theatrical oratorio for soloists, chorus, and orchestra.
